Professional Indemnity Insurance

Covers the legal liability to compensate third parties (including legal expenses incurred) who have sustained financial loss due to a breach or alleged breach of professional duty on the part of the Insured or their employees.

Professional indemnity (PI) insurance is designed for businesses and individuals who provide professional advice. It protects your business against the legal expenses and claims by third parties for damages arising from acts, omissions or breaches of professional duty in the course of your business.

What this means is if you’re a professional who gives advice or provides a service, such as an architect, a plumber or a tax accountant for example, and you do something (or neglect to do something) in the course of your work, and the customer suffers financial loss as a result, they may take legal action against you. With the right policy, you can defend your business from bearing the full cost of these claims and disputes, and from the time and resources they consume.

If a claim is lodged against you or your business for a slip up in your professional capacity, you want to have PI in place to cover your assets and protect you from excessive legal costs. Even a claim that is false could still end up costing you a fortune in defence costs.

Depending on the policy you choose, it could cover:

  • Legal and defence costs
  • Damages and claimant costs awarded against you
  • Court attendance costs
  • Claims investigation costs
  • Public Relations costs

WHAT’S TYPICALLY NOT COVERED?

  • Intentional damage
  • Known claims and circumstances
  • Fraud and Dishonesty
  • Bodily Injury / Property Damage

Please note: This is a general description of cover only – full details are set out in the Policy wording
